I have gone from being scared witless of free-motion quilting, to that excited feeling of “I think I might be able to do this one day”
It’s thanks to Marti Mitchell’s book Machine Quilting in Sections. The sampler quilt was started with this method in mind. Struggling with a full sized quilt on a domestic machine is for me, a physical and mental feat I cannot master, but meandering a section of a quilt under the needle seems like a possibility.
I have learnt a lot – one of which is to check, check, and recheck the tension and threading after every snap of thread. This happened quite a lot and I would be grateful for any advice. I let this slip by for several metres, but only once!
I am still quite erratic in speed and thus stitch length, and sometimes, a bit like running out of breath when singing, I run out of strength and/or concentration and either tighten or angularise my meander, but on the whole I feel I am on the way, and I enjoyed the journey!
Well if it’s raining you can listen to that lovely quilt!

I am so impressed by your meandering! Yes, tension can be a bit of a headache but I guess it’ll all come together with practice. Would you say this is “quilt as you go”? I’m intrigued by that concept and want to investigate further. I shall put the book you mention on my wishlist.
